The former Frances Slocum School has been lovingly transformed into 27 beautiful apartments. A newly constructed adjacent building, designed to complement the existing structure, houses 16 additional units. These 43 apartment homes make up Slocum Pointe – an affordable housing community located at 2529 Curdes Avenue in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Co-developed by Brightpoint and Keller Development, 80% of Slocum Pointe apartments are reserved for people ages 55 or older, and 20% are reserved for households that include an individual of any age with an intellectual or developmental disability. A referral agreement with Turnstone is in place to ensure that people with disabilities have access to these units. Both buildings are served by elevators, and all units are accessible and/or adaptable to meet the needs of those with physical disabilities.
All apartments at Slocum Pointe are for renters with incomes of 60% of the area median income or below, and rental rates are set to be affordable to households at these income levels. The entire development meets the National Green Building Standard’s Silver rating for energy efficiency and water conservation.
There are 35 two-bedroom and 8 one-bedroom apartments, all containing fully equipped kitchens with Energy Star appliances. Each unit also has a full-size washer and dryer, central air conditioning with a programmable thermostat, ceiling fans, wall-to-wall carpeting, window blinds, and a patio or balcony.
Community amenities include a private office for social service delivery, a multi-purpose room with full kitchen, a fitness room, a business center with internet access, and a theater room. Outdoor amenities include paved off-street parking, raised garden beds, and a wheelchair-accessible glider swing.
Nestled in Fort Wayne’s Frances Slocum Neighborhood, with sidewalks and bike trails throughout, the apartment community is conveniently located near healthcare facilities, shopping, dining, entertainment and more.
